Charlotte calls its downtown Uptown and organises it into four wards around the crossing of Trade and Tryon. It has the tallest buildings in the Carolinas and, after 2025, noticeably fewer independent restaurants than it had: nine closed inside twelve months, including The King's Kitchen, Haymaker and the Ritz-Carlton's Punch Room.
Dining rooms: Church and Union in a former church on North Tryon, La Belle Helene for French brasserie cooking, Sea Level for North Carolina oysters and Fin and Fino for the rest of the coast. Mimosa Grill is the long-running Southern room.
Up high: Merchant & Trade on the nineteenth floor, and Sophia's Lounge at street level in the same building, which posts hours past midnight.
Daytime: 7th Street Public Market, where Not Just Coffee also trades.
Night: Middle C Jazz, The Pub at Uptown and Petty Thieves, whose taproom advertises a view of the skyline.
