Plaza Midwood Food Guide

A MICHELIN Recommended restaurant in a former church, a dive bar that has outlasted everything around it, and a drive-in that has not changed its method since 1955.

An early streetcar suburb that turned into the place people moved to when Uptown got expensive, and then got expensive itself. Plaza Midwood has held onto more of its own character than most Charlotte neighborhoods managed, mostly because several of its best-known rooms simply refused to leave.

The big one: Supperland, in a converted church on The Plaza, is MICHELIN Recommended and its bar programme won the MICHELIN Exceptional Cocktails Award for Colleen Hughes, the only special award Charlotte received in the inaugural American South selection.

The holdouts: The Diamond has been on Commonwealth since 1945. Thirsty Beaver famously would not sell to the developers who built around it, and its only web presence is a merchandise store with no address on it anywhere. South 21 Drive-In still runs carhop service.

Smoke: Midwood Smokehouse and, since February 2026, The Improper Pig, which moved here from Cotswold.

Beer and late: Legion and Resident Culture on Central Avenue. The Workman's Friend posts 2am seven nights a week. Snug Harbor and Petra's are the music and dancing end of it.

Plant-based: Bean Vegan Cuisine. Everything we track in Plaza Midwood.
