Charlotte Restaurants That Have Closed

Forty-five places still sitting on live Charlotte recommendations are gone, each with a date. Plus the ones that moved rather than closed, and where their food ended up.

Forty-five Charlotte restaurants and bars on this page have closed, and most of them are still being recommended somewhere. We found them while building this site, because you cannot publish a guide to a city's restaurants without first checking which ones are still there. Every closure below has a date and a source. The ones we could not date are not on this page.

Two of them are worth reading before the list, because they explain why a page like this has to exist at all.

Big Ben British Pub closed at 5pm on Sunday 2 November 2025. Ten and a half months later its website is still live, still has no closure notice of any kind, and still publishes machine-readable business data for the Elizabeth Avenue address: the street address, the postcode, the phone number, and a complete seven-day opening-hours table saying it opens at 11 on a Tuesday. A person reading that page would drive there. So would an AI assistant reading it on their behalf.

Living Kitchen closed on 15 January 2024, after twelve years, with a farewell on its own site: "It has been our pleasure to serve you over the last 12 years." More than two and a half years later, Charlotte's own official visitor website still lists it as a place to eat.

Neither of those is anybody's fault exactly. Nobody is paid to take a page down. That is the whole point: the public record does not clean itself up, and the gap between what a city's restaurants publish and what is actually true is the thing this site measures.

Closed in 2026

Good Food on Montford served for the last time on 29 August 2026, after 17 years, when Bruce Moffett chose not to renew the lease. Three weeks later his restaurant group's own website still listed it as a current restaurant with no closing notice. The space is reported to reopen as Bittersweet.

Bubba's Barbecue closed on Sunset Road in January 2026 after about 40 years. Owner Ralph Miller told CharlotteFive that his health had reached the point where he could no longer lift the pigs onto the pit. It matters more than one closure usually does: with Bill Spoon's gone in 2020 and Bubba's gone now, no Charlotte pit is still cooking Eastern North Carolina whole hog.

The Good Wurst Co. closed its last restaurant on 20 January 2026 in Plaza Midwood. Sycamore Brewing closed its South End taproom on 5 January 2026; the business was sold and the same address reopened three days later as Club West Brewing, which is still pouring. Bitty & Beau's Coffee closed its Charlotte shop in March 2026, and 33rd & Main closed in South End in May 2026.

Closed in 2025, which was a brutal year

Uptown lost nine rooms inside twelve months. The King's Kitchen (18 December 2024), Haymaker (January 2025), The Punch Room at the Ritz-Carlton (March 2025), Queen City Grounds (June 2025), McCormick & Schmick's (June 2025), Bar One Lounge, 800 Degrees, Bella Ciao and King of Fire. Essex Bar & Bistro, on the corner of Trade and Tryon, announced its closing in August 2025.

South End lost eight. Link & Pin (February 2025), Mazi, Bossy Beulah's South End room, the Resident Culture South End taproom, Red Clay Ciderworks in LoSo (all July or August 2025) and The Eagle Food & Beer Hall (October 2025).

Dilworth lost five. Fern, Flavors from the Garden closed on 4 May 2025 after 14 years, Lebowski's Neighborhood Grill in May 2025, JJ's Red Hots on 16 March 2025, Bakersfield, and Tacos 4 Life.

Elsewhere across the city: Bar-B-Q King closed on 1 November 2025 after 66 years on the Wilkinson Boulevard corridor, announced by a sign in its own window, with the land sold. Mattie's Diner closed in Plaza Midwood in 2025, though the month is reported two different ways. NoDa Market and Deli and Billy Sunday at Optimist Hall both closed in June 2025. Beyond Amazing Donuts on Montford closed in April 2025. Wolfman Pizza's Cotswold room, Noche Bruta at Camp North End, Duckworth's Ballantyne, Krustaceans and Pauline Tea-Bar & Apothecary on Beatties Ford Road all closed in February 2025. Wentworth & Fenn closed at Camp North End in January 2025, and NoDa Brewing's original room closed the same month. December 2025 took Pizza Peel in Cotswold, People's Market in both Myers Park and Elizabeth, Marina's Tapas at Optimist Hall and Londa's Place. QueenCity Craft and Gourmet closed in Ballantyne in March 2025.

The older losses people still bring up

Price's Chicken Coop closed on 19 June 2021 after 59 years on Camden Road, with a line down the street on the last day and people queuing from five in the morning. Bill Spoon's Barbecue closed on 16 September 2020 after 57 years of Eastern North Carolina whole hog, hand chopped. The Peculiar Rabbit closed in Plaza Midwood in January 2020 after eight years. Blue Blaze Brewing closed on 17 March 2024 after eight years, following a rent dispute; its website is still live and still posts a full weekly hours grid. Art's BBQ & Deli went in December 2019, Old Hickory House and Sauceman's in 2015, and Liaisons in Dilworth back in 2009.

Moved, not closed

These are the ones most likely to send you to the wrong address, because the business is still trading and the old listing is still everywhere.

  • Soul Gastrolounge left 1500 Central Avenue in Plaza Midwood in August 2022 after the rent doubled, and reopened on 25 August 2025 at 4110 Raleigh Street with roughly three times the seats. Directories still print the Central Avenue address. Current listing.
  • The Improper Pig left Cotswold and reopened at 1600 Central Avenue in Plaza Midwood on 16 February 2026. Current listing.
  • The Scorpio, which has operated since the 1960s, left Freedom Drive in 2023 and reopened on Fairwood Avenue in 2024.
  • Sycamore Brewing became Club West Brewing at the same South End address from 8 January 2026, under new ownership and with most of the original staff.
  • Chief's Modern Cocktail Parlor became The Goodyear Bar at the same address in late August 2026, same owner.
  • Zada Jane's Corner Cafe is gone, and Painted Rooster opened in the space on 23 June 2025.
  • Leah & Louise left Camp North End on 21 April 2024 for the Historic West End. We could not confirm the new room open from any readable source, so it is not listed as either open or closed here.

Where the food went

Doc Porter's Distillery sunset in 2020, and its spirits are now poured at Great Wagon Road Distilling in NoDa. Crepe Cellar and Reigning Doughnuts were both replaced in place by the same group, as Ever Andalo and Olivelli Deli. JJ's Red Hots closed its restaurant but continued as a truck and a catering business.

What we will not call closed

Three venues were reported closed and are not on this list, because the evidence did not hold up.

Snug Harbor appears under closed venues in one published Charlotte article. Read directly on 20 September 2026, its own site is live, still calls itself "ESTD. 2007", carries a show calendar and is advertising a tour date for autumn 2026. It is open.

Derita Dairy Bar & Grill has a Yelp banner saying closed and a 2025 television feature saying open. A Yelp banner is not a source. It is not on this page and it is not published as open either.

Lupie's Cafe is open on Monroe Road, but its old domain now serves an Indonesian gambling page built on a spoofed shopping template. The restaurant is fine. Its domain is not, which is why we link no website for it.

A note on where this came from

Charlotte had a reporter covering exactly this. Queen City Nerve shut down on 17 August 2026 after nearly eight years. Its archive is still one of the best records of what this city has lost, and it will never gain another entry. Charlotte currently has no single running closure tracker, which is part of why this page is as long as it is.

If we have something wrong here, or a restaurant on this list has reopened, tell us and we will fix it. We would rather be corrected than be another stale page.
