Black-Owned Restaurants in Charlotte, and Why This List Is Short

Three Charlotte restaurants publish their ownership clearly enough for us to tag it. That number says nothing about the city and everything about what gets published.

This list has three restaurants on it and it should have many more. That is the finding, not the list.

We tag a venue as Black-owned when the restaurant says so itself, when a named publication says so, or when it holds a listing in a Black-owned business directory. A roundup article is not enough, and a name is never enough. Applying that rule to Charlotte, three venues cleared it.

Sun Burger Vegan Cuisine on Elizabeth Avenue, through an EatOkra listing. Cuzzo's Cuisine in University City, reported by QCity Metro. Bite Your Tongue on Beatties Ford Road.

Now the restaurants we could not tag. Oh My Soul cooks African-inspired vegan soul food in NoDa and names no owner anywhere on its site. Soul Miner's Garden at Camp North End is described on its landlord's tenant page but its own site renders nothing a machine can read. Several more are named in local coverage that returns an error code to anything automated.

Charlotte has the Historic West End, the Beatties Ford Road corridor and generations of family restaurants along them. The gap between that and a three-item list is not a gap in the city. It is a gap in what is published, indexed and readable, which is the thing this site was built to measure. One directory pass would probably double this page, and when it does we will say so here.

If you run one of these restaurants, or you know one that belongs here, tell us. There is no charge and never will be.
